Carl Scholberg passed away on February 12, 2010, in Portola, CA
He was born June 29, 1915, in South Dakota. His family lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota during his early years. He graduated with a Degree in Forestry from the University of Minnesota in 1939. In the 40’s Carl traveled to Washington State where he fell in love with his wife to be, Maren. They were married in 1940. Carl worked for Boeing in Seattle, WA, before he and Maren moved to Chilcoot, CA. where Carl had his first position with the U. S. Forest Service. Carl worked for the Forest Service for 30 years and worked on the Plumas National Forest in Quincy and Greenville. They also lived at the Jackson Creek Guard Station for awhile. In 1953 Carl went to work on the Tahoe National Forest in Sierraville, CA, where he retired after 21 years in 1975.
Carl was involved in the community in many ways including the Sierra Valley Hospital Board, the Treasure Mt. 4-H club, and the Loyalton Rotary Club. He was a member of the Portola United Methodist Church. Carl can also be remembered as “first in line” at election time to vote at the Sierraville Elementary School.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maren; children Kristine, Eric, and Kurt; grandsons Jeff, Eric Blayne, and Eli; and three great-grandsons, Logan, Conner, and Lincoln. He was a great husband, dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Donations in Carl’s memory may be made to the United Methodist Church in Portola, CA, the Rotary Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
Services for Carl are being held at the United Methodist Church in Portola, CA, on Saturday, February 20th at 11 am.
